Note : From the 1st to the 12th series. It’s a great privilege for our company to have dubbed the entire series of this very original cartoon broadcast by Comedy Central and MTV, one of the most ground-breaking of its type in the last few years. Transgressive, desecrating, politically un-correct, vulgar in its images and language…..you either hate it or you love it. “All the characters and the situations in this show, including those based on actual living persons, are completely imaginary. All of the celebrities voices are imitated….poorly. the following programme contains bad language, and due to its content it is recommended that nobody watches it”. This is the opening credit of “South Park”, the American cartoon series that has enjoyed an enormous success, but at the same time has been heavily criticised and has raised numerous objections. The series was devised by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and is created with computer animation. Our approach to the dubbing was completely different to that of our Roman colleagues who dubbed the first four series. Even though the quality of their work was absolutely impeccable, we decided together with the client, to dub the series as close to the original as possible. The strength of this cartoon lies undoubtedly in its original themes, but also in the fact it breaks away from obvious clichés on all levels. The original for example, uses only 4 voices that cover all the roles, irrespective of the sex of the character, male or female. We decided to use seven voices throughout the series. Obviously this choice was open to criticism by those who were used to the first versions in Italian, which we avoided trying to “copy”, for the aforementioned reasons, and as a sign of respect for our colleagues who had worked on this project previously. The dubbing sessions were very hard, because seven voices had to cover not just the main characters, but also hundreds of minor roles of adults and children, males and females, well known and unknown characters. It was a great challenge, but honestly it was also a great deal of fun.
